When Jude LaCava met Dr. Joshua LaBaer, executive director of the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, the connection was instant. Both lost their mothers early to breast cancer. Jude’s gift from the Dorothy Foundation gave Josh’s cancer research team the boost they needed to help turn their discovery into a highly reliable, non-invasive test that can provide an early diagnosis of breast cancer, thus increasing the chances for survival and a higher quality of life.

Dorothy LaCava (pictured with her son, Jude) was diagnosed with terminal cancer at 44. Her family founded the Dorothy Foundation in the hopes of advancing cancer research so that no other family would suffer as they did.

Jude’s belief in “putting all bets on the table” when it comes to cancer research means that the Dorothy Foundation funds a wide variety of approaches to cancer research. In his work with Stephen Johnston (above), director of the Biodesign Center for Innovations in Medicine, Jude and his family have funded research into melanoma, pancreatic cancer and a diagnostic test that can detect 90 different diseases with one drop of blood.

No. 3: Rely on your relationships

No. 4: Don’t be afraid of the ‘valley of death’

No. 5: Understand that information saves lives

It’s time to celebrate our scientists

Just as in people, cancer is the №1 cause of illness and death in older dogs. With the world’s largest canine cancer vaccine trial, Dr. Stephen Johnston hopes to find out if the vaccine his team has developed will stop cancer before it starts. “If this can work in dogs — and that’s a big if — then we believe it can work in people, too,” said Johnston.
